Dr. Julia Kornegay, chair of the Feed the Future Legume Innovation Lab Technical Management Advisory Committee (TMAC), presented the Legume Innovation Lab Award for Meritorious Achievement to the following researchers at the Feed the Future Legume Innovation Lab Grain Legume Research Conference 2017 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, in August 2017. Additionally, the TMAC chose to award three Feed the Future Legume Innovation Lab scientists with Early Career Grain Legume Scientist awards.

The 2017 recipients of the Legume Innovation Lab Award for Meritorious Achievement awards, which “recognizes and honors laudable contributions to research on grain legumes and the development of technologies and policies that benefit smallholder farmers in developing countries" were the following long-term PIs and collaborators.

  • Clementine Dabire, INERA- Burkina Faso, SO1.B1, IPM-omics: Scalable and sustainable biological solutions for Pest Management of Insect Pests of Cowpea in Africa
  • Mywish Maredia, Michigan State University, SO4.1, Impact Assessment of Dry Grain Pulses CRSP Investments in Research, Institutional Capacity Building and Technology Dissemination for Improved Program Effectiveness
  • Robert Mazur, Iowa State University, SO2.1, Farmer Decision Making Strategies for Improved Soil Fertility
  • Phil Roberts, University of California, Riverside, SO1.A5, Genetic Improvement of Cowpea to Overcome Biotic Stress and Drought Constraints to Grain Productivity
  • Jim Steadman, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, SO1.A3, Improving Genetic Yield Potential of Andean Beans with Increased Resistances to Drought and Major Foliar Diseases and Enhanced Biological Nitrogen Fixation

The inaugural naming of three Early Career Grain Legume Scientists recognizes and honors "early career achievement in grain legume research and commitment to improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in developing countries.”  These researchers—and many, many others like them—represent the future of grain legume research, a future filled with talent and promise.

  • Benoit Batieno, INERA – Burkina Faso, SO1.A5, Genetic Improvement of Cowpea to Overcome Biotic Stress and Drought Constraints to Grain Productivity
  • Kelvin Kamfwa, University of Zambia, SO1.A2, Improving Photosynthesis in Grain Legumes with New Plant Phenotyping Technologies
  • Juan Osorno, North Dakota State University, SO1.A1, Genetic Improvement of Middle-American Climbing Beans for Guatemala

The awards were presented during the Conference Banquet on August 17 in the Laico Ouaga 2000 Hotel in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
